When Natasha was gone, I whirled on Damian. âWhat the hell, dude? Why did you bring her here?â
He looked genuinely confused. âI thought since you were so upset, it was better if she apologized to you in person. She really didnât mean anything by it. Besides, didnât you want an excuse to talk to her?â
âNot like that!â I glanced into the kitchen to make sure that my mom wasnât listening to the conversation, then I leaned close so I could whisper to him. âYou knew that I liked Natasha. I asked you not to flirt with her. But now you two are what, dating? I was upset because I saw the two of you together last night, and you just brought her over to my house to rub it in my face again!â
His eyes widened. âOh, shit,â he breathed. âIâm so sorry, Brie. Iâve really fucked this up.â He sank back in his chair and stared up at the ceiling.
That wasnât the reaction I was expecting. Guilt hit me as I saw the pain on his face. âDid you⦠did you really not realize?â
He shook his head. âI mean, I kinda knew that you liked her, but not that, uhâto be fair, all you said about her was âdonât be gross.â And you were right. Once I genuinely started talking to her, then sheââ
I held up my hands. âStop. I donât want to hear all the details about how you two got together.â
âBut what should I do now?â He frowned. âDo you want me to break up with her?â
âNo!â The word popped out before I could even think about what it meant. But I couldnât force my best friend to give her up now, and it wouldnât make Natasha like me any better if Damian dumped her. âI mean, if you two are happy, I donât want to interfere with that.â
His frown melted into relief. âThank you. Because you know how hard it is to find anyone who actually has an open mind in this town. Most people laugh when they see me put on a dress.â
I put my hand on his. âI know, and thatâs not fair. You should wear whatever you like. Putting everything into these stupid gender buckets, like boys should wear pants and girls have to wear dresses, thatâs ridiculous.â
He nodded vehemently. âYeah, you get it.â Then a grin spread across his face. âSanta Cruz is supposed to be weird, right? When we have to wear that dumb uniform, we should swap. Iâll wear the skirts and you wear the pants.â
I grinned back at him. âDeal.â
âAs for Tashaâ¦â He trailed off, looking uncertain.
âJust treat her nice, okay?â I said. âAnd try not to show off the PDA too much around me.â If he was dating her, I would have to get used to seeing them together, but there were limits.
Damian nodded. âDeal.â
I squeezed his hand to seal our agreement, but then I wanted to go back to the other tough topic. âSpeaking of Santa Cruz, we need to get in first.
