When Natasha was gone, I whirled on Damian. “What the hell, dude? Why did you bring her here?”

He looked genuinely confused. “I thought since you were so upset, it was better if she apologized to you in person. She really didn’t mean anything by it. Besides, didn’t you want an excuse to talk to her?”

“Not like that!” I glanced into the kitchen to make sure that my mom wasn’t listening to the conversation, then I leaned close so I could whisper to him. “You knew that I liked Natasha. I asked you not to flirt with her. But now you two are what, dating? I was upset because I saw the two of you together last night, and you just brought her over to my house to rub it in my face again!”

His eyes widened. “Oh, shit,” he breathed. “I’m so sorry, Brie. I’ve really fucked this up.” He sank back in his chair and stared up at the ceiling.

That wasn’t the reaction I was expecting. Guilt hit me as I saw the pain on his face. “Did you… did you really not realize?”

He shook his head. “I mean, I kinda knew that you liked her, but not that, uh—to be fair, all you said about her was ‘don’t be gross.’ And you were right. Once I genuinely started talking to her, then she—”

I held up my hands. “Stop. I don’t want to hear all the details about how you two got together.”

“But what should I do now?” He frowned. “Do you want me to break up with her?”

“No!” The word popped out before I could even think about what it meant. But I couldn’t force my best friend to give her up now, and it wouldn’t make Natasha like me any better if Damian dumped her. “I mean, if you two are happy, I don’t want to interfere with that.”

His frown melted into relief. “Thank you. Because you know how hard it is to find anyone who actually has an open mind in this town. Most people laugh when they see me put on a dress.”

I put my hand on his. “I know, and that’s not fair. You should wear whatever you like. Putting everything into these stupid gender buckets, like boys should wear pants and girls have to wear dresses, that’s ridiculous.”

He nodded vehemently. “Yeah, you get it.” Then a grin spread across his face. “Santa Cruz is supposed to be weird, right? When we have to wear that dumb uniform, we should swap. I’ll wear the skirts and you wear the pants.”

I grinned back at him. “Deal.”

“As for Tasha…” He trailed off, looking uncertain.

“Just treat her nice, okay?” I said. “And try not to show off the PDA too much around me.” If he was dating her, I would have to get used to seeing them together, but there were limits.

Damian nodded. “Deal.”

I squeezed his hand to seal our agreement, but then I wanted to go back to the other tough topic. “Speaking of Santa Cruz, we need to get in first.
